Claire Preston, Bee, Reaktion books, London, 2006.
‘Handmaidens of wild vegetation’ — this is one of the many beautiful descriptions of bees that bespeckles this little black and yellow book — zooming in between archaic historical references, to politics ( ‘Never Kill a Bee Movement’), to the city of the future as a beehive (Fritz Lang’s Metropolis). As with the other books in this series, Bee is yet another engaging and rich treasury of biological facts and the joint enterprises between humans and bees from honey production to use of bees to detect landmines, bombs and other explosives.
