Ondanks stelselmatige schaalvergroting, intensivering en modernisering van het boerenbedrijf is het gemiddelde inkomen van Europese boeren sterk achteruitgegaan. Ook in Nederland staat de toekomst van de land- en tuinbouw onder druk. Mogelijkheden voor alternatieven zijn beperkt. Een beloftevolle ontwikkeling ligt in de verbinding tussen de agrarische sector en steden. Zeker nu wereldwijd het besef groeit dat de energie- en voedselschaarste alleen samen aangepakt kunnen worden, en steden daarin een sleutelrol vervullen. Het thema ‘Voedsel’ van S+RO 5/2010 verkent die rollen.

*Urban paradox is coined by architect and writer Carolyn Steel in her book ‘Hungry City’: “….the fact that although most of us live in cities, in a deeper sense we really dwell on the land, relying as much on the natural world as our ancestors did. The ‘paradox’ comes from the fact that we fail to recognise this.”
