Mouth-locks worn by slaves in Brazil to prevent geophagia

Geophagy is defined as a willful consumption of earth, soil or clay. From different viewpoints it has been regarded as a psychiatric disease, a confined cultural practice or a result of poverty and famine. The authors of Geophagia: The History of Earth Eating found, however, that geophagy do not allow simple categorisation of psychiatric disorders or cause by famine. Geophagy is multifactorial and occurs in many regions of the world, across cultures and geographies.
