The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses

“The most archaic origin of architectural space is in the cavity of the mouth” — Pallasmaa on the Taste of Stone p 63.

The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses is an accolade to the senses of architecture beyond the western ocularcentric caress of the eye alone. The focus of this essay is architecture as an intricate and multi-sensorial part of human ecology and the subtle transferences between tactile, taste, olfactory, sound and sight experiences of buildings and architectural spaces.
