Amsterdam is teeming with hidden edible life forms. Plants grow on disused ground and fish abound in its canals. Stalking the urban snoek & wort is an urbanibalist adventure which will stalk, cook and eat the flesh and flora that thrive in Amsterdam West.

On 19-20 September 2009, Wietske Maas will set off with a fisherman, city botanist Claud Biemans and any one curious to find out about the hidden bounty of urban goodies to fish and ferret food sources in Geuzenveld-Slotermeer. All sourced ingredients will be taken back to the Stedelijk in West kitchen to be cooked in collaboration with fish aficionado and chef (Een Vis, Twee Vis) Rolf van Dijk.

Saturday 19 September

9:15-9:30h Meeting point in The Cook, the Farmer, his Wife and their Neighbour space — Lodewijk van Deysselstraat 61, Geuzenveld-Slotermeer

9:45 -13:30h Fishing with a local fish angler along the lakesides of Sloterplas — bream, roach, perch and if we’re lucky, some zander (snoekbaars)

14:00h Meeting point in the Cook, the Farmer, his Wife and their Neighbour kitchen space before setting off for the edible flora expedition

14:30-16:30h Foraging with city botanist Claud Biemans for pungent and spicey plants that can  transform the usually banal canal fish into a toothsome delicacy

Sunday 20 September

12:00-16:00h Hands-on cook session with fish chef Rolf van Dijk in The Cook, the Farmer, his Wife and their Neighbour kitchen space. This will be a collective kitchen experiment in making a recipe based on the urban-found ingredients to be tasted by the public during the Stedlijk goes West / The Cook, the Farmer, his Wife and their Neighbour Harvest day on 27 September.

To join, please make a reservation for one or all of the activities: the fishing expedition, the plant hunt on Saturday and/or the cooking workshop on Sunday
